Success was in the air this spring for our A-S teams. Every Upper Division team finished with a winning record; Varsity Baseball 7-2, J.V. Baseball 5-2, Lacrosse 4-3, and Track with fifteen athletes qualifying for the Gotham Games.
Varsity Baseball wrapped up the season with a competitive game against Buckley for the league championship. Led by great pitching, solid defense and timely hitting the boys fell short in a 2-1 defeat. As one parent commented, “Thanks for the best baseball game I have seen in a very long time,” and as coaches we could not agree more!
J.V. Baseball posted a 5-win season, the best we have seen from a J.V. Baseball team in over ten years. They too had strong pitching and timely hitting. Practices in the gym focused on glove work, tee work, and game situations. On days the team had a field they worked on infield/outfield strategies, skills, and game knowledge.
Varsity Lacrosse focused on getting better and having fun while doing so, I would say they succeeded at both. A balance of first year players and returning starters made practices and film sessions that much more important. Through culture and character building, intentional game-based drills, and fundamental teaching of the game, our boys enjoyed the process and saw real growth in their game IQ and skill set.
Our Varsity Track athletes learned the fundamentals of running mechanics, worked on stamina, speed, and endurance. The team focused a great deal on form, which resulted in each athlete continuously improving their times throughout the season. Distances such as the 100, 200, 400, 800, mile, and hurdles, provided an opportunity to develop both their strengths and weaknesses. As a result, the team qualified fifteen runners for the championship meet -- The Gotham Games. A-S posted three podiums; 80-meter hurdles, long jump, shot-put, and every runner posted their personal best at the championship meet.
Sixth Grade Baseball was victorious in their games against St. Bernard’s and St. David’s. The coaching staff looks forward to the contributions these players will make on our J.V. and Varsity teams next year.
Sixth Grade Lacrosse played a very competitive game against St. Bernard’s. While the team came up short by two goals, their play was outstanding. It was especially impressive when you consider they were mostly first year players, and they hadn’t been on a lacrosse field as a team prior to the game. Our varsity coaching staff is eager to work with these boys next lacrosse season.
