4th Grade

PE and Athletics

Our sports education program introduces the fourth-grade boys, by season, to an educationally rich sports experience that develops sufficient skills and the understanding and tactical knowledge to participate successfully in games.

Music / Performing Arts

Our 4th-grade students sing, move to music, create and notate ostinatos and orchestrate group ostinatos on rhythm instruments as they learn to read and play basic notes and rhythms. The curriculum celebrates the social nature of music making, bringing students together as they share creative ideas. Many boys take instrumental lessons and choose to participate in the 3rd/4th Chorus and/or 4th Grade Ensemble.

Theatre

Fourth-grade students learn the true meaning of ensemble: they write and perform new Egyptian myths in their own theatrical production at the end of the year.

Visual Arts

The boys work on a long-term project that involves both 2D and 3D design as well as dramatic play called “Invented Civilizations.” Students incorporate research and note-taking into this multi-faceted project where the concept that civilizations create culture is emphasized. In Woodshop, boys take on increasingly difficult engineering concepts that focus on cause and effect to create a project with complicated moving parts.

Homeroom / Advisory / SEL

Students build on skills from earlier years to take a more active role in establishing an effective, positive classroom community where they show support, empathy, cooperation, kindness, encouragement and growth.

Writing

Students further cement their skills by writing across genres and in other content areas. Students are introduced to rubrics and checklists to guide their own revisions.

Reading / English

Through more complex literature, students analyze multiple aspects of texts and provide evidence to support their verbal and written responses.

Library

In the Fourth Grade, boys further develop their ability to locate books independently, and join the older boys in participating in Adi’s Reading Challenge, reading and voting on the best recently published novels and nonfiction to predict the winner of the next Newbery Award.

Mathematics

Students master place value and whole number operations and extend their practice to include fractions and decimals through the lens of solving context-based problems

Science & Engineering

Fourth graders participate in the Trout in the Classroom program by collecting and analyzing data from the trout-filled tank, culminating in releasing the trout each spring in Westchester County, New York.

Social Studies / History

In Fourth Grade, students will think critically about how power determines the rise and fall of civilizations both past and present by analyzing and understanding the important aspects of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia and their impact.

Spanish

By Fourth Grade, boys have a strong enough foundation to be able to engage in more structured independent and group work. Boys begin to make interdisciplinary connections through Project-Based Learning and are challenged with their first novel in Spanish.

Technology & Digital Fluency

By Fourth Grade, boys use digital tools and knowledge for creativity and innovation to express themselves and understand the world.
