CORNERSTONES FOR KINDERGARTEN READINESS
Cornerstones, Allen-Stevenson's Transitional Kindergarten, is intentionally designed to give young five-year-old learners a strong start to Allen-Stevenson’s Kindergarten program. By giving them "the gift of time," boys will have the skills necessary for the best learning outcomes.
Our faculty, in conjunction with our departmental specialists, work together to establish a curriculum that provides a strong academic foundation through core content: literacy and numeracy. A smaller class size ensures that boys receive expert individualized attention to build confidence while promoting social-emotional and communication skills to bridge the transition from preschool to Kindergarten.
How Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Differs From Preschool
Cornerstones will promote skills introduced in preschool, ensuring that boys are better prepared for academic success in Kindergarten and beyond.
- Boys become more confident communicators with time and space to develop socially and emotionally
- Faculty members expand executive functioning skills based on age and stage of development
- Cornerstones strengthens fine and gross motor skills
- Cornerstones provides structured, focused learning activities and transitions
- Direct, scaffolded instruction familiarizes boys with kindergarten expectations and routines
- Boys develop greater independence and autonomy
THE ALLEN-STEVENSON ADVANTAGE
There are many reasons to join the Allen-Stevenson family, which, for over 140 years, has been dedicated to the education of young boys. During these K-8 years, A-S boys experience significant milestones and are engaged in developmentally appropriate opportunities at each stage, all of which are designed to foster confidence and leadership skills.
- Our spaces are designed to create an optimal learning environment for boys, many of whom are kinesthetic-experiential learners
- Understanding how boys develop and learn allows our faculty to stretch -- not stress -- our boys, supporting each student's educational journey from the earliest years until they transition to high school
- Our program encourages collaboration and teamwork, giving students opportunities to share thoughts, ideas, and feelings while developing brotherly relationships and lasting friendships with peers
- Allen-Stevenson creates a strong home-school connection; our leadership team and Parents Association partner to build community and provide meaningful parent education
