2nd Grade

PE and Athletics

The second-grade boy spends his P.E. class learning the foundational skills, rules, and strategies of team sports. Through a series of creative and modified games and activities, these boys begin to form the base for a healthy and active lifestyle.

Music / Performing Arts

During the third year of music, second graders' musical worlds broaden quickly, with many of them choosing to join the orchestral program, featuring in-school lessons, while all students are challenged to use their knowledge of music to work together to create larger multifaceted pieces of music involving singing, moving, and playing instruments during which we rely heavily on ostinati and broaden our musical scope to pay close attention to form.

Theatre

On the next step in their theatrical journey, Second Grade students perform in a larger venue for their end-of-year presentation, such as our brand-new Performing Arts Space.

Visual Arts

The concept of artist as designer and Architecture as Art are introduced as students learn to move from a two-dimensional plan to a three-dimensional project. Creating more complex and longer term projects are introduced in the Woodshop with boys learning and using more tools to create moving parts on their wood projects.

Homeroom / Advisory / SEL

Students continue to explore what it means to have a growth mindset, both as a student and a friend, and develop skills for handling feelings and compromising with peers. They build strong work habits and learn to collaborate with classmates.

Writing

Second-grade students continue to build their writing stamina across several genres (narrative, non-fiction and poetry). They write multiple sentences on a topic with increased focus on spelling, mechanics and grammar.

Reading / English

Students use their increased decoding skills and sight word vocabulary to build reading fluency. They read across multiple genres and begin to focus on reading comprehension and writing about what they read.

Library

Boys listen to books that explore themes connected with holidays and heritage months, learning that books can be a tool for self-exploration and learning about others.

Mathematics

Students develop multiple strategies for addition and subtraction to three digits. They extend their understanding of place value and equivalency, as well as concepts of time and money.

Science & Engineering

Second graders construct models of volcanoes to illustrate landforms and plate tectonics, and the boys design an evacuation plan for a community settled near an active volcano.

Social Studies / History

Through an extensive research project, second graders investigate how geography affects the lives of people around the world and recognize similarities and differences between their own lives and those of others.

Spanish

Geography of the Spanish-speaking world comes into play in second-grade classes, as boys become more aware of who they are in the world and the different places where Spanish is spoken. Boys begin to apply their new vocabulary to novel situations, relying on critical thinking to choose appropriate words and phrases.

Technology & Digital Fluency

In Second Grade, boys develop confidence in using digital tools and resources for decision-making and problem-solving.
