Kindergarten

PE and Athletics

In Kindergarten, its about the boys' discovery of how and where their bodies can move throughout space, and, the development of spatial awareness, balance, movement levels, and social skills form the base of learning.

Music / Performing Arts

During the first year of music, kindergarteners grow their foundational listening skills through moving, singing, exploring, and playing, helping them understand their musical world through the different lens of “finding the steady beat,” “high and low pitch,” and “ speak, sing, whisper, shout.”

Theatre

In our students' first introduction to theatre, kindergarteners present an informational or story-telling presentation at the end of the school year.

Visual Arts

The curriculum emphasizes joy and exploration. Students work with a multiplicity of methods and materials, including drawing, painting, and building, creating scaffolding for their learning throughout their time at Allen-Stevenson.

Homeroom / Advisory / SEL

Kindergarten students learn the skills necessary to work cooperatively within their new school community. They learn the language to name their feelings and those of their peers and with teacher support learn ways to solve problems that might arise.

Writing

Kindergarten writers learn the skills to become confident beginner writers. They learn how to choose a topic to write about and expand on it across multiple pages using simple sentences and pictures. Boys use their budding phonemic awareness skills and high frequency word knowledge to help them spell unfamiliar words.

Reading / English

Boys develop their phonics, phonological awareness and listening skills to prepare them to become successful emergent readers. Boys are exposed to books across a variety of genres and interests to foster a joy of reading.

Library

Boys listen to stories and check out books every week in our cozy egg-shaped seating area and participate in our “Book a Day” program, which enables them to take home a new picture book every day to read with their families.

Mathematics

In Kindergarten, boys use a variety of tools and strategies to develop a strong number sense. Boys solidify their understanding of the five and ten structures, compose and decompose numbers and develop a beginning understanding of place value.

Science & Engineering

Kindergarten boys examine speed and determine which toy car is the fastest by conducting a simple investigation. They also learn about how plants grow in the different hydroponics and aquaponic systems in the Greenhouse.

Social Studies/ History

Kindergarteners learn that they have a unique identity that brings value to their families and communities. Boys explore the similarities and differences of themselves and others and learn the value of both.

Spanish

This year is all about exposing boys to the spoken language. At an age when they are socially more willing to take risks and when their brains can hear and mimic language readily, boys are encouraged to speak as often as possible.

Technology & Digital Fluency

Students are introduced to the foundations of computer science and digital fluency that will be necessary for them to be successful using the iPads, laptops, and various educational technology tools they will encounter during their time at Allen-Stevenson.
