Frequently Asked Questions
Below are a few answers to commonly asked questions. However, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Katy Duckworth-Schachter at [email protected] if you have additional questions or would like more information. We are happy to assist you in any way we can!
Like most independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the operating budget at Allen-Stevenson. In addition to support from the endowment, A-S relies on the generosity of our community to close the gap between tuition revenue and operations each year. Gifts to the Annual Fund contribute approximately 10% of the operating budget each year and support all areas of a student’s education, including academic, arts and athletic programs.
We gratefully recognize our donors in our printed Annual Report each fall, which is traditionally nestled inside our winter Lamplighter Magazine. Leadership donors in our Lamplighter Circle, which starts at $3,500, are recognized by giving level. Donors are also recognized without a giving amount, in alpha order by their son’s class, alumni year, and constituency, such as grandparents and parents of alumni. We also have many donors, at every level, who prefer to remain anonymous and are listed as such.
Yes. In addition to the school’s philanthropic priority, the Annual Fund, the Parents Association also hosts a Celebration each spring that supports an area of need at A-S. Traditionally this event has supported financial aid, or a newly endowed fund in honor of a faculty member. The Parents Association will also offer an opportunity each May for parents to contribute to a faculty and staff appreciation fund, which is in lieu of purchasing individual thank you gifts for teachers at the end of the school year. Our Eighth-Grade families are also involved in supporting a parting Legacy Gift alongside their sons during their final semester at Allen-Stevenson.
There are many opportunities and ways to support A-S throughout the year and we recognize that it can be confusing. Please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to discuss with you what you are thinking and where your gift could have the biggest impact at A-S.
The Annual Fund remains the school’s philanthropic priority and the area of biggest need at the school. However, if you would like to make a single gift and designate it to multiple areas, please contact us. We can help you evaluate your philanthropic commitment for the year and avoid further outreach.
Yes! Just as important as dollars raised, is participation. Gifts to the Annual Fund start at $5 and are a vote of confidence in your son’s school or alma mater. We report our parent participation % and alumni participation % to our peer schools and these high numbers are a sign of the strength of our community. A gift, of any amount, counts for participation and is deeply meaningful to us.

We will never disclose to a teacher the $ amount of a gift made. However, we will share with them that a gift was made, and, with permission, who made it. We can also tell them an anonymous donor made a gift. Making your gift to the Annual Fund in honor of a teacher who has had an impact on your son’s life is an especially meaningful way to recognize them.
